Short sale fraud is the newest and most prevalent form of real estate fraud occurring in the residential housing market today. Anybody who has had his or her home equity stripped by a neighbor committing short sale fraud knows this painfully.

The costs of this crime extend far beyond the fraud-by-proxy that harms the neighbors: the truth is that short sale fraud is having a profound impact on our economy by artificially distorting and depressing property values and therefore the revenues received by taxing authorities. This in turn affects the ability of municipal and state agencies to be in possession of adequate funding.

Like a cancer that goes undiagnosed and treated, short sale fraud is spreading because virtually nothing is being done by either the private or public sector stakeholders to make it unattractive to commit.
